Solitude

Dr. Seuss was bob on: "all alone, whether you like it or not, alone will be something you'll be quite a lot". From a v young age I learned to embrace the art of being alone. Living with 7 others also rapidly reminds you of the importance of solitude. At times it also proved the theory that even in a room full of people - even friends - you can feel immensely alone.

Since working at a hostel I've overheard countless guests discuss how unnatural it feels travelling solo. I feel v grateful for my rough years at high school that moulded me into someone who protects their 'me' time fiercely - in fact it's crucial to my overall well being. Here are some methods to stretch the muscle from years of  patience and practice.

Nurture a hobby: learn Mandarin, calligraphy, axe throwing, sudoku etc. Whatever is teasing you.

Thanks to the internet, you can feel like you're 'in the room' in an empty house. Reddit, podcasts and pets bring immeasurable happiness. Reading is also an ace form of escapism ~ armchair travelling and a bag of murray mints can put the world to rights.

If you find that you overthink when left to your own devices, try jigsaws. Seriously.

Sometimes the best way to feel less lonely is by switching your phone off. I have a m8 who downloads the instagram app each time she wants to post, then deletes it as it's too addictive.

Airplane / do not disturb mode = the secret to combating procrastination!

People watching is bags of fun. Find a coffee shop, sit in the window and watch the world go by. Bliss.

Here's a powerful piece of advice from the marvellous Eckhart Tolle: Accept - then act. Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it. Always work with it, not against it. Make it your friend and ally, not your enemy. This will miraculously transform your whole life.

Self-care is immensely important. Letting go of what no longer serves you is one of the greatest acts of self-care you can ever do.

When the world is conspiring against you and your brain is fried, listen to your favourite album from start to finish, hang out w your neighbour's cat or binge watch Netflix. FYI Santa Clarita Diet rocks.

& finally, carry a mirror ~ pen explosions are a thing!
