When Can I Start?

As you may know, I recently began living/working at a hostel in London and thought I'd give some insight into how you could too. The main incentive of hostel life is that you become a local in a destination of your choice whilst saving $ fast, as rent is typically peanuts. It's also an ace way to cross paths with like minded fellow freaks from all corners of the world. It isn't generally a long term job however as living quarters tend to be, shall we say cosy (a gratuitous term for sharing a room full of bunk beds with 7 others).

The two most common ways of being hired is a) being a guest and clinking w the staff or b) emailing in advance your available dates to work with a colourful CV. If you find yourself staying in a hostel that you'd love to move in to, get familiar with the staff. Hang out in the common areas and ask around about any job vacancies - don't be shy! As they're your potential roommates, check if you vibe before you let on. As long as you've got the travelling bug, wild anecdotes from Timbuktu and more passport stamps than hot dinners, they'll eat you up!

Having an edge such as being bilingual, having a tattoo of Bart Simpson, a mohawk or general joie de vivre will also gain you brownie points. Just remember when to reign it in.

An ace way to stand out is to research the city the hostel is situated in extensively as, if you get a receptionist position like myself, you will essentially be a tour guide. In particular if you know what bars are open latest on any given night (and at the drop of a hat), you'll be the toast of the town.

Never underestimate the glory of living in the same building you work at and dodging a daily commute.

Hostels aren't all fun and games and you may find yourself in some rather sticky situations. It's paramount to be streetwise as you'll be living with a motley crew and a clash of personalities is inevitable. Find the balance between high alert and fuck it. It's imperative that you use your best discretion.

Here are some personal standards to abide by and repeat to urself every damn day:
